"West Virginia Diving and Rafting
      with Eric Horton
           August 14-15, 2010"

I have been talking about putting this trip together for some time now and I have finally gotten around to getting the dates confirmed and the details set. We will be in Summersville, WV the weekend of August 14-15. We will be diving with Sarge's Dive Shop on Saturday and rafting the Lower New River with Class VI River Runners on Sunday. Here is what the weekends schedule looks like:

Diving on Saturday, Aug 14 at 1PM. We will be doing a 2 tank charter in the afternoon with Sarge's Dive Shop. I dove with them last year and had a good time. Summersville Lake is more like Lake Rawlings (less like Fishersville for those that remember the glory days). Sarge's runs a good operation and the boat is a large pontoon boat. Last year we did a wall dive that ranged from 30-110 feet. You can stay as shallow or as deep as you like. The visibility last year was around 20-30 feet. I was impressed. The water temp was warm, I wore a 5mm with no hood or gloves and was quite comfortable but I have a bit more padding than most people so if you are prone to cold, a 7mm would be advised. We will be staying at the Country Inn & Suites in Summersville Saturday night. I suggest we eat at Smokey's on the Gorge Saturday evening…..a great buffet with awesome views of the New River Gorge.

Rafting on Sunday, Aug 15 at 9:00 or 10:00AM. We will be doing a full day rafting trip down the Lower New River. The total trip should run 4-6 hrs depending on how fast the water is moving. WV is well known for white water rafting. The Lower New is considered the "beginner" section of the river but is far from easy with several class 5 rapids. If the water is moving that day you will think they put us on the "expert" section of the river. This section of the river is suitable for both young and old and novice and experienced rafters alike. Lunch will be provided on the river. We pull over mid day and the guides will lay out a buffet for us. Class VI is a good outfit to raft with. When we are done rafting we will be ready to drive home. Last year I stopped at Pies and Pints in Fayetteville and it was so good I'm planning on stopping again this year. Nothing like a couple of pizzas after a day on the river.

The trip is priced at $295 per person and includes 2 boat dives, lodging Saturday night with breakfast Sunday morning, all day rafting trip, and lunch on the river. Transportation, other meals,  scuba gear, tanks and fills are not included but we can help you get anything you need.

The drive from Charlottesville is 3-4 hrs and most people will probably leave early Saturday morning and meet at the dive boat by 1PM. I will probably be in WV on Friday and we will have additional hotel rooms reserved in case anyone else would like to come a night early.

I did this exact same trip last August to test out the waters and it was a blast. With a good size group, we are sure to have a fun weekend. Keep in mind that the whitewater rafting is the main attraction on this trip. Non-diving spouses and friends will enjoy this weekend as much as us divers will. Non-divers are welcome to come on the boat with us and swim, snorkel, or just hang out. I have included links so you can get some more information.

I have attached some pictures from last years trip. If you would like any more information about this trip give me a call. I can be reached at 434-806-9796. You can also reach Dive Connections at 434-964-9200. Lastly, I am a bit late putting this together and I need to get a rough idea of how many people are interested. If you could give me a call or email and let me know that would be great. If you know your coming go ahead and remit payment to Dive Connections to reserve your spot. Space is limited on the dive boat so the sooner you can sign up the better.

Hope to see you all soon.
